Happy May Day! A day where we celebrate the hard won struggles for workers rights. I learned recently that it goes further back than the Chicago Haymarket Affair where many were martyred fighting for an 8 hour work day. It’s a dancing celebration of Mother Nature, the halfway point between the Spring Solstice and the Summer Equinox, think May Pole. Learn more about May Day here where Laura Flanders interviewed author Peter Linebaugh. Citizens are on the move protesting the ills of the current ‘bro-tocracy’ that’s taking a wrecking ball to our democracy. Here’s a great substack to subscribe to to keep up on the actions and how you can partcipate from your laptop and on the streets. Yours Truly, Jeannie Hopper is MC’ing the New York City Dance Parade May 17th, then I’m spinning a set in Thompkins Sq Park for the Dance Festival where the parade ends, but not the dancing. Many stages and lots to explore from 3-7pm. Also on the dj bill, Ali Coleman and Danny Tenaglia, one of the Grand Marshall’s this year. Many moons ago we deemed the NYCDP the unofficial start of summer and the kick off for the summer season of so many wonderful outdoor parties and events throughout the 5 Boroughs. And there’s an after party at Nublu with DJ’s Misbehaviour, Ali Coleman, Timmy Regisford and Danny Tenaglia! Tickets and information are posted at DanceParade.org
