Happy holiday season kick off! I wonder if it was intentional that election day lands before the start of the holidays to help cure our ‘election hangover.’ And oh how we need some joy after the grueling campaigning that seemed to go on forever. And as our guest artist notes ‘I’ve been involved in countries where you don’t have the freedom to say what you want…and people were afraid. People don’t realize, this is a fragile thing we got.’
While the LSL tech-reconstruction continues, I do have a treat for you. The interview I did earlier this year with Grammy Nominated multi-instrumentalist, song writer, producer and engineer, Raul Midon. Such a prolific soul! His latest album, and 15th album release is “Lost & Found". It’s his second release on his own imprint, ReKondite ReKords. The name is from the adjective recondite that means ‘hidden from the mental or intellectual view.’ He mentions Iannis Xenakis and Cage as early influences thanks to his father, a Argentinian folkloric performer who also opened for Lenny Bruce at some point. I caught up with him at the NYC Ganja Parade before he hit the stage in Union Square Park, apropos, as “Lost & Found” features Raul’s ‘The Ganja Song.’ Special thanks to Fiona Bloom of The Bloom Effect. In the Spotlight: Badawi and Studio We TV
There’s an amazing artist that has been a part of the LSL sonics going back to 1993, Badawi. I received an album by Badawi from ROIR Records back then and loved the percussion fused with drone like hypnotic sound scapes. I love the unusual, the unique, the art of sound and that’s what caught my ear. Fast forward to the 2010’s when I got to meet Raz Mesinai, the talent behind the Badawi moniker. I was hanging out at Dub Spot, the electronic music school in Chelsea, and he was one of the instructors. Since, he has created his own school for sonics and electronics, Underground Producers Alliance (UPA) based in Brooklyn, NY. His latest album released is “Protection”. There’s a lot of layers of messages to that title heard deep in the many layers of percussion. Percussion is like a heartbeat, and speaks to us on a level beyond words, powerful…”Dedicated to the people of Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, Congo, Yemen, Syria, Haiti and all other countries being fucked over by western imperialism and racist colonialism.”. Listen. Seems apropos while genocide is all too real in these times.
