Romain was a maverick. He consistently released new productions since the mid 90’s until he passed just over a week ago. Tonight though, it’s a lot of his tunes from the 2000’s highlighting his two record labels, NuFaze and Metro Trax, and remixes he did for others like Keith Thompson are also in the mix. His sound is truly synonymous with Liquid Sound Lounge. I loved getting a new jam in my inbox from Romain. And many may or may not know, he got me into putting my spoken vocals on vinyl in collaboration with DJ Jon Cutler and Romain. You’ll hear them in the mix tonight. Our very first tune we did together ‘This Track’ closes out the set. It’s an ode to the dj’s at the time and all of us hanging at the famous Underground Network, pre-social media. We would exchange vinyl promos from the various record labels everyone worked at to the many dj’s and industry alike that flocked to Sound Factory Bar Wednesdays for Don Welch and Barbara Tucker’s weekly gathering where Louie Vega was the resident DJ, and downstairs the classics flowed. And you heard the chant in conversations ‘is ___fill in the blank_ playing this track’.. No internet to track it, just the joy of actually hanging in person, in community.
And coming up March 28th, No Kings March is going to be huge!!! I’m helping to organize the live national coverage for Pacifica National News being carried on over 200+ affiliate stations. Tune into WBAI to listen starting at Noon and continuing until 7pm. WBAI starts the broadcast, then throws it to the Twin Cities, then to Colorado and ending on the West Coast in Berkeley with a wrap up report from Alaska and Hawaii. It’s all live all day across the nation!
