Hello Lovelies,

As the smokey skies blanket the Northeast from the fires, the sun shines bright through the haze. It feels kind of like a metaphor for these times. As we catch our breath from the uncertainty of this moment, music is the sunshine that can guide us through the fog of history. Music knows no borders. It speaks truth to power. It brings joy to carry us through the long arm of history. On that note, I reflect on the passing of Quincy Jones and Roy Haynes, and the reincarnation of King Street Sounds.

The passing of Quincy Jones, what a prolific journey on this planet. His story is one of perseverance. So much to say, but I will share one project that may have not made the headlines as journalists wax poetic on his life. He produced the soundtrack for The Wiz featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. There’s something about that movie even beyond the stellar cast. Maybe it’s that the Emerald City was filmed at the base of the twin towers? Maybe it’s the story of hope, and home but told from a different perspective in a different time, post civil rights 60’s. A film that allowed all of us to connect but from an urban perspective vs rural, albeit same struggles, different places. Hmm.

I have also been waxing poetic on the passing of the prolific life of Roy Haynes. I recall first meeting his son, Graham Haynes, an amazing trumpet player that uniquely applied electronic manipulation to his craft and created unique sonics, un-categorizable but unforgettable. He was a guest on LSL, and always a welcome person to run into when traversing downtown. Tonic was an experimental music spot formerly on the lower east side. I recall dj’ing their in a large wine barrel with poets in the mix once or something to that effect. It was the place to experiment. I was in awe of Graham imagining what it must be like to be a second generation artist. Why? While there’s so much joy in performing and creating, the other side of the coin is surviving as an artist in the face of adversity.

Jones and Haynes, lived through so much history from jim crow to the civil rights movement, to the on-going work at hand toward building a true democracy for all. Their lives were informed by these decades of seeming impossibilities yet they persevered. And their legacy is a reminder to me of the power and impact artists have in making change and helping us to ground in the possibilities while facing what seems like the impossible. Sun-Ra, Dizzy, Louis, Muddy, and so many more ancestors await them, Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.

Any who, the prolific stories of these artists and others ground me while reflecting on the decades LSL has spanned from 1993 to present. 1993 was poetry, downtown scene, acid jazz, big vocal house music, big clubs, underground clubs, the internet in its’ infancy. We share a birth year with King Street Sounds. King Street has now joined in partnership with Armada Music to remix and reimagine the deep catalog for the next generation. Check out the "House Music Royalty: The Story of King Street Sounds” video recently posted. Proud to be on their roster of hits collaborating with DJ Romain & Jon Cutler on “Deja Vu” performing/writing the spoken vocals resulting in a multitude of remixes from it’s release in the late 90s thru the 2010’s.

The beautiful artwork we presented as a backdrop on stage for Joi Cardwell and Keith Thompson’s performances is by Agni Zotis titled ‘Safe Space’. It was a conscious effort to not only present an artist who was moved by LSL in more ways than one, but also to ‘green up the party’ ie. intentionally decorate with minimal waste afterward.
